Emil von Gerliczy (Wolfsbüchel 1871 – 1924 Zurich) Church watercolour on paper, 45.5 x 31.5 cm estate stamp: Emil von Gerliczy ESTIMATE €100 – €200 STARTING PRICE €100 An early 20th-century painter with affinities to German and Swiss Expressionism. An important exponent of colourful, loosely executed, sometimes caricatured and exaggerated figure and landscape painting. After an initial career in the military, he devoted himself entirely to art from 1897 onwards, undertook extensive travels and came into contact with the avant-garde via Dresden. He drew decisive inspiration from his encounter with Emil Nolde and his exchanges with artists from the Brücke circle, which led to greater expressiveness in his painting. He produced watercolours and paintings featuring peasant figures, village scenes and landscapes, often emphasising local colour, free perspective and expressive contours.
