Description
Geometric Abstraction Jarchov, Fritz Untitled (abstract composition). 1969. Oil over graphite pencil on canvas. 150 x 98.5 cm. Signed and dated. Framed in a narrow wooden frame. – Slight soiling on the canvas. Some mildew stains, mainly in the lower section. Some small brown spots in places. Slight loss of paint in the centre and in the upper right-hand section. Subtle surface abrasion at the edges. – Overall in good condition. An outstanding work of great formal clarity. Fritz Jarchov studied architecture at the Technical University of Munich. He subsequently worked as an architect, graphic designer and painter in the Heidelberg-Mannheim area, with intervals spent in southern Europe. Jarchov was a member of the Deutscher Werkbund and a founding member of the Heidelberg ‘Künstlergruppe 79’. In his paintings, which are often composed in a collage-like manner, he developed a multi-layered synthesis of geometric and biomorphic forms. Whilst Cubist-style techniques characterised by flat areas of colour dominate these large-format works, his later work is more strongly influenced by Jarchov’s ideological views and the impact of the street theatre ‘Karawane’, which he founded. Jarchov’s works are now held, amongst others, in the collections of the Kunsthalle Kiel, the Kurpfälzisches Museum in Heidelberg and the Kunsthalle Mannheim. Oil and graphite on canvas. Signed and dated. Framed in a narrow wooden strip frame. - Light surface soiling on the canvas. Predominantly in the lower section, slightly foxed. Partially with small brown stains. In the central and upper right areas, some paint loss. Subtle surface abrasions along the edges. Overall in good condition.
