Description
German Post-War Berner, Bernd Untitled (Flächenraum). 1986. Watercolour and chalk on Fabriano watercolour paper (with watermark). 35 x 25 cm. Signed and dated. - Traces of studio marks on the reverse. Overall in very good condition. A work rich in colour. This work is defined by a rectangular, compact field of colour in Persian red at the centre, from which traces of colour radiate, extending across the picture surface in varying intensities. Gestural brushstrokes and splatter marks in soft shades of red, orange and blue characterise the peripheral areas of the composition in particular. The enclosed centre is thus contrasted by an open, more dynamic edge. This juxtaposition of a concentrated area of colour and dispersed traces of colour creates a dynamic interplay between order and movement. Watercolour and crayon on Fabriano watercolour paper (with watermark). Signed and dated. – Studio marks on the reverse. Overall in very good condition. A vibrant, richly coloured work. – This work is structured around a compact rectangular field of Persian red at its centre, from which traces of colour extend across the picture plane with varying intensity. Gestural brushstrokes and splashes in subtle shades of red, orange and blue are particularly concentrated in the peripheral areas of the composition. The closed and concentrated central form is thus contrasted with a more open and dynamic pictorial margin. This interplay between a dense colour field and dispersed painterly traces creates a compelling tension between order and movement. *This lot is subject to standard tax.
