Bernd Berner is one of the defining figures of abstract painting in Germany after 1945. This drawing belongs to the body of work known as the ‘Flächenräume’ (spatial planes), which the artist developed over several decades. In these works, Berner explored the interrelationships between colour, surface and space. The composition is dominated by a rectangular, concentrated field of cobalt blue, which forms the visual focal point of the sheet. From this concentrated centre, traces of colour and droplets in subdued shades of red, yellow and green spread out across the surrounding areas, lending the work a subtle dynamism.
