Description
German Post-War
Berner, Bernd
Untitled (Flächenraum). 1987. Watercolour, wax crayon and coloured pencil on watercolour paper. 32.4 x 24.8 cm. Signed and dated. - Slight, barely noticeable holes at the edges; minimal studio marks on the reverse and handwritten numbering. Overall in very good condition. A colour-rich work in vibrant watercolour.
Using a brilliant vermilion red and a dynamic gradation of colour from the centre outwards, Berner presents his vibrant colour space. The centre of the rectangle is filled with a rich, opaque carmine red, created by dense, overlapping hatching lines. Towards the periphery, the colour dissolves: the edges of the rectangle merge into watercolour-like streaks, partly orange and partly pink, which flow organically downwards and moisten the paper, creating a sense of transparency. This transition from density to transparency creates a sense of optical depth – what Berner himself termed ‘surface space’, in which areas of colour create a sense of spatial depth through layering.
