Description
German Post-War
Hartmann, Thomas
Untitled (Male Figure). 1983. Oil on canvas. 100 x 89 cm. Signed and dated on the reverse. Framed in a shadow gap frame, which is slightly loose. – Partially showing minimal scuffing. Overall in very good condition.
An expressive, figurative painting by Thomas Hartmann, characterised by a clear formal and colour language, thereby deliberately setting itself apart from the gestural painting of the Neue Wilde. With the end of the avant-garde movements in the 1970s, the rediscovery of figurative painting began in the early 1980s. A recurring central theme in Hartmann’s work is the relationship between the individual and the community, and the tensions that accompany it; he expresses this in compositions brimming with a spirit of experimentation and stylistic breaks.
