Description
German Post-War Grützke, Johannes Le cour humide. 2003. Oil on cardboard. 38 x 46 cm. Monogrammed and dated; signed, titled and dated on the reverse, with the location ‘Paris’. - With very few small, isolated scuffs. Overall in very good and clean condition. Private collection, Berlin. - This work reveals a lesser-known side of Johannes Grützke: as an attentive observer of the incidental, he turns his gaze to overgrown foliage, which, according to the title, is set in a damp Parisian courtyard. The motif stands in deliberate contrast to what Grützke is primarily known for: the figurative, ironically exaggerated compositions with their distorted physiognomies and theatrical gestures, which defined him as a co-founder of the School of New Splendour. Yet here too, Grützke remains true to his fundamental principle, neither idealising his composition nor arranging it according to decorative criteria, but rather depicting what he finds without embellishment.
