Description
German Post-War
Neue Wilde
Naschberger, Gerhard
Standing Vase. 1981. Acrylic on canvas. 151 x 90 cm. Signed, dated and titled on the reverse. Framed with a black shadow mount. - Some slight scuffing in places. Overall, very good condition.
This large-format painting was created during the period when Gerhard Naschberger, as part of the ‘Mülheimer Freiheit’ group and within the context of the Berlin Wilden, helped shape the figurative renewal of German painting around 1980. The title plays on a double meaning: the vase ‘stands’ and it ‘steals’; it appropriates the picture plane and overwhelms the space. Naschberger’s talent for ‘transforming a banal motif into a state of ecstatic enlightenment’ (Jean-Christophe Amman) is expressed in the painterly energy that takes over the entire picture plane.
