Description
German Post-War
Nicolai, Carsten
Head. 1994/1995. Oil and paper on canvas. 113 x 177 cm. Signed and dated. On the reverse, a label with details of the work and information on provenance. Framed in a black shadow mount. - Isolated small stains and scuffs. Overall in very good condition.
Galerie Eigen + Art, Leipzig/Berlin. - An early painting by Carsten Nicolai, created at the time of the founding of his label ‘noton’, and thus documenting the transitional phase from painting to conceptual and sound art at the intersection of visual art, music and natural science. On a light monochrome background created from layers of paper applied to the canvas, Nicolai uses energetic brushstrokes to depict an abstract head in combination with other symbolic motifs. Text and image exist in a productive tension with one another, in that the word ‘head’ is both named and alienated, thus rendering the depiction resistant to unambiguous interpretation.
