Description
German Post-War
Niggl, Thomas
Unzeit. 1984/85. Oil on canvas. 68 x 72 cm. Signed and dated on the front and back; titled on the back of the frame and with a typographic label. Framed in an artist’s frame. – Subtle craquelure. Overall in very good condition; the colours are fresh.
The artist Thomas Niggl initially studied architecture in Munich and, in the late 1960s, founded the Omnibus Verlag publishing house with Heimrad Prem and Christian d’Orville. In 1976, he became a member of the Herzogstrasse collective, whose participants viewed painting as a group as a reformatory act. Through their painting actions, the group rebelled against the cult of the reclusive ‘genius’ artist, thereby offering a way out of social isolation.
