German Post-War
Palermo, Blinky
Series of 5 foil-embossed prints. In: Heinz Gappmayr, Visual Poems/Palermo: Five Miniatures. 1972. Each foil-embossed print on heavy watercolour paper. Each 7.5 x 3.5 cm (42 x 27 cm). Each signed. – Slipcase slightly discoloured and with some scuffing. The volume itself is in exceptionally fresh condition and impeccably beautiful, with brilliant printing; the colours are rich and intense.
Jahn 28. – Published by Guido Hildebrandt Verlag, Duisburg 1972. – Copy outside the edition of 100. – Rare. An outstanding portfolio by Heinz Gappmayr and Blinky Palermo, whose oeuvre is characterised by a consistent exploration of space, colour and form. These works were created during a decisive phase of Palermo’s career, in which he engaged intensively with the reduction of form and colour, as well as with serial and conceptual strategies. Here, Palermo’s concentrated visual language combines with Gappmayr’s condensed textual miniatures to form a multi-layered dialogue of quiet, haunting presence. Palermo’s precisely composed colour schemes emerge as autonomous structures which, through their contemplative colour spaces and rhythmic interplay of surfaces, unfold an impressive visual power. The foil embossing lends the compositions an extraordinary tactile quality and enhances the interplay of surface, colour and light. The result is an ensemble in which Palermo’s colour-intensive compositions and Gappmayr’s precisely placed linguistic symbols exist in a productive tension with one another and, through their respective autonomy, facilitate a rich, aesthetic experience.
