Description
German Post-War
Richter, Gerhard
Canarian Landscapes I. 1971. Heliogravure on vellum. 15.5 x 23 cm (39.5 x 50 cm). Signed and numbered. - Reverse with faint ink show-through, partially delicate and with barely noticeable staining. Overall in very good condition. A magnificent print with a distinctly soft, textured effect; the colour is fresh and intense.
Butin 39c. – One of 100 copies. - Published by Galerie Heiner Friedrich, Munich 1971. - The six-part edition from which this sheet is taken is based on photographs taken by Gerhard Richter in the Canary Islands in 1969 and subsequently published as heliogravures. Rather than reproducing the photographic original exactly, Richter transforms the motif into a visual world characterised by blurring and atmospheric density. The heliogravure thus becomes a means of alienation: the precise technique allows for a painterly dissolution of the contours, creating a tranquil, almost dreamlike atmosphere.
