Description
German Post-War
Schult, HA
Trash Man. 1996. Assemblage using mixed media (rigid foam, tins, metal strips and other materials). Mounted on a wooden plinth. Approx. 170 x 63 x 38 cm. Dust and dirt deposits in the recesses. Signs of corrosion due to age and inherent to the work. Overall in good condition.
The Trash Man is part of HA Schult’s internationally renowned series Trash People, which has been one of the most significant pioneers of action and object art since the 1960s. Since the 1990s, Schult has created over a thousand of these life-size rubbish sculptures, which have been erected worldwide as monuments against environmental pollution and the plundering of resources. Each of these sculptures is unique, made from compressed, inorganic waste such as cola cans, cables, coffee pots, keyboards and other everyday rubbish. The individual components are permanently bonded together using a special adhesive and then spray-painted in individual colours. The choice of material is deliberate: the waste of consumer society serves as the material for the art; the sculptures thus themselves reflect the throwaway mentality. The Trash People are featured in renowned public collections such as the MoMA in New York, the Tate Gallery in London and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Through their international exhibitions and media coverage, they have become one of the best-known symbols of environmental criticism in contemporary art. Due to its specific nature, the item is stored at an external location.
