Description
German Post-War
Stöhrer, Walter
Untitled (For Anna and Rainer). 1985. Acrylic, felt-tip pen and ballpoint pen on grey Velin card. 24 x 16 cm. Signed, dated and partially illegibly inscribed. - Slightly browned at the edges, with some minor scuffing in places and faint handling marks. Overall in good condition.
The work is registered in the catalogue raisonné of the Walter Stöhrer Foundation under the number P85-059. Private collection, Northern Germany. - With just a few masterfully executed lines and strokes, the artist outlines a stocky, almost doll-like, condensed figure that defies any academic sense of completeness. Stöhrer himself referred to the principle of the ‘Bellmer doll’, whose body fragments he, by his own admission, assembled into figurative alphabets. Accents of pink enliven the internal form and lend the figure a physical presence, whilst the surrounding network of calligraphic traces and nervous lines places the figure within a dense, energetic field.
