Cologne Art Market ’71. – Portfolio for the 5th Cologne Art Market, 5–10 October 1971. The Cologne Art Market marked the beginning of a new chapter in the history of the art trade in 1967. As the world’s first international fair for modern art, it created a forum in which galleries could present contemporary art beyond institutional spaces and make it accessible to a wide audience. The inaugural event took place with eighteen exhibitors at the historic Gürzenich in Cologne and is today regarded as the birth of the global art fair scene and as the direct precursor to today’s Art Cologne. The initiative came from Hein Stünke, founder of Cologne’s Der Spiegel gallery, whose commitment played a decisive role in establishing a new dialogue between artists, gallery owners and collectors. The fifth edition of the art fair in 1971 featured 34 galleries, including Brusberg, Neuendorf, Der Spiegel and Zwirner. International participants included Ileana Sonnabend, Gian Enzo Sperone, Denise René (Paris, New York) and others – galleries that played a decisive role in the international networking of the avant-garde. - Missing: the work by Michelangelo Pistoletto (offset print on self-adhesive mirror film).
