German Post-War Wunderlich, Paul The Song of Songs, which is Solomon’s (Das Hohe Lied). With 10 (1 signed) original colour lithographs by P. Wunderlich. Hanover, Caslon, 1970. Loose sheets in an original blue silk slipcase. Large folio (66.5 x 52.5 cm). One of 310 numbered copies of the English edition (GA 480), signed by the artist in the colophon. Printed in France by E. and J. Desjobert. Loose sheets in an original blue silk case. Large folio (66.5 x 52.5 cm). – Papiergesänge 113 - For Paul Wunderlich, the *Canticum canticorum* became ‘… a vehicle for one of the most fascinating sequences of images … Unlike any of his predecessors, Wunderlich succeeded in translating the associative nature of the Psalms into his surreal visual language and thus into our present day … Wunderlich transforms the metaphor into a graphic collage that unfolds the poetic structure of the text into a visual narrative …” (H. T. Flemming in: Brusberg, Nachtr. z. WV, p. 220). “The lithographs do not constitute an illustration of the ‘Song of Songs’; rather, they offer a further interpretation of the text by transposing its erotic elements into a cool atmosphere” (Papiergesänge).
