Description
Fluxus
Beuys, Joseph
Countdown 2000. 1981. Colour offset on vellum. 80 x 55 cm (88 x 64 cm). Signed and numbered. Mounted in places on a backing board. - With a few very faint, barely visible scuffs. Overall in very good and clean condition. An excellent, finely textured print of the large-format composition with a narrow margin.
One of 2000 copies. - Schellmann 377, p. 302. - Created and published as part of the Committee 200 project, Hamburg/Munich, as a joint edition with Andy Warhol to mark the approaching turn of the millennium. The sheet depicts a machine-generated computer calendar running from 1 January 1980 to 1 January 2000, listing the countdown to the turn of the millennium next to each date. As the first print was faulty, Beuys corrected it by hand in red ink, thereby transforming, with minimal intervention, an artefact of early computer culture into a critical statement on the fallibility of digital systems.
