East German Art Morgner, Michael Death + Shadow. 1987. Ink, wash, asphalt varnish and embossing on handmade vellum. 69.5 x 52 cm. Monogrammed and dated; signed, dated and titled on the reverse. – A closed tear approx. 23 cm long at the top. Overall in very good condition. An expressive work featuring a vigorous wash in a full-format composition. We would like to thank Mr Nicholas Staudt for including this work in the supplement to the catalogue raisonné. – This work is characteristic of Morgner’s oeuvre, in which he engages intensively with humanity and the human condition. In the artist’s works, physical motifs merge with a multi-layered symbolic language. Characteristic features include the tightly composed pictorial spaces, which create an oppressive effect. The figures depicted appear anonymous, vulnerable and shaped by existential experiences. Ink, wash, asphalt varnish and embossing on handmade wove paper.
