Description
Austrian Post War Rainer, Arnulf ‘Aufschwung’. 1969. Diamond engraving in brown with an underprinted yellow tone plate on vellum. 29 x 38.5 cm (50 x 65 cm). Signed and numbered. - Isolated, very slight handling marks; a slight crease and a tiny, barely visible tear (0.3 mm) on the lower right outer edge; on the reverse, a small, very faint brown stain on the lower right outer edge; small mounting residues in both upper corners; overall in very good condition and exceptionally beautiful. Excellent print, with a wonderfully rough-edged appearance in places, contrasting beautifully with the clay plate, with a wide margin, including the skim line on the right. Breicha R 92. – One of 40 copies. – Printed by Rudolf Lauterbach, Vienna. – Rainer’s etching technique is characterised by a highly gestural and expressive power, which testifies to his artistic exploration of the line. The line is not a boundary, but rather takes shape in densely placed hatching to form the two-dimensional subject of the image. Rainer transforms it, with a draughtsman’s gesture, into a powerful density, using it to create a form that constitutes the work itself. Contrary to the direction of reading, concentrated strokes run from the bottom right to the top left, culminating in a concentrated surge. Set against a yellow background, they resemble a beam of light that seems to become tangible. Diamond engraving in brown with underprinted yellow clay plate on wove paper.
