Description
Austrian Post-War Viennese Actionism Rainer, Arnulf Perego. 2025. Drypoint in red on vellum. 39.6 x 30.4 cm (66 x 53 cm). Signed and numbered. - Overall very good condition. An exceptionally magnificent, colour-rich and burred print with margins, featuring the artist’s margin on the left. One of 25 copies. Rainer’s etching works with the nuances of a single printing ink, which, through varying line density, produces a tonal range from pale salmon pink and translucent rosé at the frayed edges to luminous vermilion and, finally, a deep, rich carmine in the denser centre. The circular composition follows his programmatic principle of overlaying and obliteration: What appears in the centre as a crimson mass is not a painting, but accumulated drawing – the line itself becomes colour, whilst the white of the handmade paper brightens the vermilion of the periphery into that warm, almost glowing light. Rainer deliberately chose red as the colour of blood and vitality, and the spectrum visible here—from ivory through salmon pink, vermilion to carmine is not merely a richness of colour, but a dramatic principle – a curve of intensity that inevitably draws the eye towards the centre. What appears in the centre as a massive blaze of vermilion is not a painting, but accumulated drawing – the line itself becomes colour, meaning the work can be placed within the continuity of his ‘Overpaintings’ and ‘Cross’ series, in which geometric form and gestural excess enter into a productive tension.
