Austrian Post War
Hundertwasser, Friedensreich
The Last Tears. 1979. Colour woodcut on light Japanese handmade paper. 51.4 x 36.3 cm (60.8 x 41.8 cm). Signed, dated “12 May 1980”, inscribed “Vienna”, with work number “662 A” and copyright symbol, and numbered. In the upper right-hand corner of the print are the 13 coloured dots; in the lower left-hand corner is the title in Japanese. Mounted in places on the reverse of the passe-partout. – Very slightly yellowed at the outer margins, isolated slight handling or crease marks, occasional crease folds; paper slightly wavy at the outer margins due to the printing process; very isolated, pale brown spot; overall in very good condition and exceptionally beautiful. An extremely elegant print, rich in contrast and conveying painterly qualities, with a border and a hand-made edge on all sides.
Koschatzky 75. - One of 200 copies. - Based on the painting of the same name from 1967. - Cut by Kenji Okura Horishi, Tokyo; printed by Matashiro Uchikawa Surichi, ibid. Bearing their ink stamps. - Published by Gruener Janura AG, Glarus, Switzerland. - This work represents Hundertwasser’s collaboration with the Japanese printers Okura and Uchikawa, culminating in a complex design combination of almost thirty colour patterns and printing plates. The elements that make up the work are rendered on paper with great intensity: a face viewed head-on with several pairs of eyes, a house suggested by its outline with countless closed windows, captured by vertically falling tears. They resemble a pattern of illusion and despair, addressing the act of shutting oneself off from a present situation that engenders a sense of heaviness, and serving as a wake-up call. Man, house and surroundings must be brought into balance.
