Description
Austrian Post-War
Lettner, Robert
Balkenbild. 2001. Oil on canvas. 28 x 38 cm. Signed on the reverse. Framed in a shadow mount. – A few very small, barely noticeable spots of scuffing. Overall, very good condition.
We would like to thank the Robert Lettner Archive for kindly confirming the authenticity of the work. - This work belongs to the series of ‘Balkenbilder’ (Beam Paintings), which Robert Lettner produced over more than three decades and which can be regarded as one of the central constants of his oeuvre. The horizontal division of the picture plane follows the characteristic principle of visual infinity as a window onto a utopia. The compressor-powered airbrush lends the work a distinctive graininess and enables an interplay between sharpness and blurriness that challenges the viewer’s perception, causing the picture plane to constantly shift between flatness and seemingly endless spatial depth. - Works by Lettner are held in the collections of MUMOK Vienna, the Albertina Vienna and the Hamburger Kunsthalle. The Belvedere in Vienna also holds works by the artist. His work was prominently featured in the major retrospective exhibition “The Beginning. Austrian Art from 1945 to 1980’ at the Albertina modern, his work was prominently featured.
