Untitled (abstract composition). 1965. Aquatint etching on Arches Velin (with watermark). 35.6 x 27.7 cm (56.8 x 44.9 cm). Signed and numbered. Mounted under a passe-partout. – Slightly browned at the margins on both the recto and verso. A few scattered brown speckles on the recto; the verso is rubbed and marked in pencil. Overall in good condition. A magnificent, rough-edged print, with a full margin and a hand-cut margin on two sides.
Rosset Culleron 46. – One of 30 copies. - André Marfaing’s style dispenses with superfluous decoration as well as irrelevant questions; his exploration of the colour black and its subtle shades, the meanings behind them, the contrast with light, and the interplay of emptiness and fullness also reveals philosophical questions concerning existence, nothingness and being. From these contrasts, Marfaing creates works with a tension-filled rhythm and immediate precision and conciseness.
