Grâces ténébreuses. 1959. Colour lithograph on Arches Velin (with watermark). 47 x 36.5 cm (65 x 50 cm). Signed, dated, titled and numbered. – Only a few isolated instances of minimal finger marks along the edge of the sheet. Overall in very good condition. A magnificent, atmospheric print with full margins.
Webel 722. – One of 30 copies. - Dubuffet’s artistic oeuvre encompasses the development of the concept of Art Brut, a deliberately anti-intellectual art movement that signified a turn towards naivety and childlikeness. In this, he was inspired by the direct approach to art taken by people with intellectual disabilities or mental health conditions. Dubuffet’s resulting style was characterised by simplified figuration and perspective – as well as a great enthusiasm for experimenting with the printmaking techniques of lithography and woodcut, which can also be seen impressively in this work.
