Description
International Postwar
Lagerfeld, Karl
Fashion sketch for Tiziani (Woman in a brown suit). c. 1965. Felt-tip pen and fabric swatches on vellum. 40 x 30 cm. Inscribed ‘No 774’. – Reverse with partial ink bleed-through. Overall in very good condition. Expressive, lively composition with confident linework.
Provenance: Tiziani Archive, Rome – Estate of Raf Ravaioli – Private collection, Palm Beach, Florida – Tiziani Archives, Palm Beach Auctions, 2019. - In the early 1960s, Karl Lagerfeld created a series of over 160 fashion drawings for the Roman fashion house Tiziani, which capture the essence of haute couture with elegant, feather-light lines. Using fibre-tip pens, ballpoint pens and chalk on card, he developed slender, elongated figures whose flowing silhouettes exude a dreamlike lightness and timeless sophistication. The drawings captivate with their vibrant splashes of colour and ornamental patterns, which reflect the opulent couture style of the House of Tiziani – and its prominent clientele, such as Elizabeth Taylor. Despite having been created primarily as working templates for pattern-cutting and production, the sheets appear as standalone works of art in which Lagerfeld’s unmistakable aesthetic signature is already fully formed.
