International Postwar
Christo (i.e. Chr. Javacheff)
Vespa. Collage, pigment print, retouched with coloured pencil on heavy rag paper. 30.5 x 30.5 cm. Signed and numbered. A magnificent, colour-rich work with a full-format composition.
Schellmann 201. – One of 45 copies (A.P.) - The Wrapped Vespa forms part of Christo’s series of so-called ‘Wrapped Object’ collage prints, which systematically transform objects of everyday life and industrial culture into wrapping projects – alongside the Wrapped Volkswagen (2013), the Wrapped Automobile (Studebaker Champion, 2015) and the ‘Wrapped Motorcycle’ (Harley Davidson, 1997). From an art-historical perspective, these editions combine the conceptual rigour of Nouveau Réalisme – a movement Christo encountered in Paris through Yves Klein, Jean Tinguely and Daniel Spoerri – with the pop-cultural iconicity of the chosen objects. The integration of the technical plan drawing into the collage also alludes to Christo’s practice of conceiving the artwork both as an autonomous image and as a sketch for a potentially realisable large-scale project – whereby each piece oscillates between the status of a completed artwork and that of a design document.

From an art-historical perspective, these editions combine the conceptual rigour of Nouveau Réalisme – with which Christo was closely associated in Paris through Yves Klein, Jean Tinguely and Daniel Spoerri – with the pop-cultural iconic status of the chosen objects. The incorporation of the technical project drawing into the collage further reflects Christo’s practice of conceiving the artwork simultaneously as an autonomous image and as a sketch for a potentially realisable large-scale project – so that each copy oscillates between the status of a finished work of art and that of a working document.
