International Postwar Ernst, Max A Moon in High Spirits. 1970. Colour silkscreen print on heavy-weight vellum. 55 x 46.1 cm (82.9 x 61.7 cm). Signed and numbered. - Outer margins slightly browned, with small spots in places; a small pressure mark at the bottom left; traces of former mounting in the corners on the reverse. Overall in very good condition. An excellent, rich and colour-intensive print with a wide margin. Spies/Leppien A25 A. - One of 150 copies. - Printed by Haas, Stuttgart. - Published by Galerie Der Spiegel, Cologne. - Based on a painting from 1960. - The artistic technique of frottage (French for ‘rubbing’), which is also employed in this print, is characteristic of Max Ernst’s creative process. The artist first employed this technique in the mid-1920s by dyeing wooden floorboards and creating impressions of the floor on paper. Later, he used natural materials for the process, such as leaves and shells, transferring their surface textures onto the paper using a drawing medium. According to Ernst, frottage is a technical means of ‘enhancing hallucinatory abilities’. Colour silkscreen on strong wove paper. Signed and numbered. – Outer margins very slightly browned, isolated small stains, small scuff at the lower left, traces of former mounting in the corners on the reverse.
