Description
International Postwar Matta (i.e. Roberto Sebastian Matta Echauren), Roberto Mes Dessins. 1990. Colour silkscreen print on vellum. 116.8 x 124.5 cm. Signed and numbered. - A tear in the centre of the lower edge; mounted on the reverse in places beneath the passe-partout; overall in very good condition. A magnificent, colour-rich print of the full-format image. One of 50 copies. - From: “23 Artistes pour Médecins du Monde”. - Published by Éditions de la Tempête, Paris. - With his distinctive visual language, Roberto Matta breaks the mould of Classical Modernism in the second half of the 20th century by expanding it to include the dimension of the unconsciously mutable. He incorporates both constructive and narrative elements into his figurative visual language, which he subjects, in a broader sense, to an abstracted formal will. Matta’s visual forms draw on diverse fields such as architecture, natural science, literature, poetry and religion. Taken as points of inspiration, they reflect his creative, inner world of experience and are combined with a message of ironically pointed sharpness. His compositions are characterised by a highly distinctive otherness that appears both unusual and fascinating. Amorphous figures in imaginary spaces, conveying an impression of boundless time whilst remaining temporarily concealed. Colour silkscreen on wove paper.
