Description
International Postwar
Codesido Estenós, Julia Manuela
Landscape in Infinity. 1950s. Oil on painting board. 40.8 x 31.8 cm. Signed. Mounted on a backing board and framed. – Barely noticeable craquelure, slightly rubbed at the edges. Overall in very good condition. The colours are fresh.
See: Moll, p. 117, Volume I. – From 1931, Julia Codesido worked as a professor of drawing and painting at the National School of Fine Arts in Peru. Alongside her teaching, the Peruvian artist was active at this time as a feminist activist and an advocate of Indigenism. She developed a unique visual language that explores themes of Peruvian identity, yet is not confined to folkloric modes of representation. The European influence, resulting from numerous journeys to Switzerland, Spain, England and France, is particularly evident in this work, in which a naturalistic depiction of the landscape gives way to an abstract, expressionist composition and a colour scheme rich in contrast.
