Woman by a Vine (2). Circa 1902. Lithograph on vellum. 23 x 17 cm (33 x 24.5 cm). Signed in stone and labelled by another hand. Mounted in places on backing paper and beneath the passe-partout. - The sheet is slightly browned due to age and has some light discolouration in places; the edges are faintly soiled, with some delicate brown spots; on the reverse, there are remnants of a previous mounting. Overall in good condition. Excellent, chalky print.
Roger-Marx No. 20. – Variation in wash. – In the fourth variation of the twelve-part series ‘Femme au cep de vigne’, Renoir condenses the motif to a single standing female figure, surrounded by a dense interweaving of broad, sweeping brushstrokes. Compared to the earlier variants, the watercolour-like quality of the depiction allows the outline lines to recede in favour of painterly tonal values, lending the sheet an atmosphere of flowing movement.
