Description
Fin de Siècle by Ruckteschell, Walter Alexander Moritz The Holy Family. 1915. Mixed media including watercolour, pencil and gouache on brown vellum. Approx. 38 x 32 cm. Monogrammed and dated. Verso bears an estate stamp. In frame (unopened). – Slightly wavy due to the material. Slight crease marks in the lower corners. Minimal pinholes in the corners. Overall, very good condition. A magnificent work with rich colours. The work depicts a scene in the tradition of European iconography of the Madonna and Child with St Joseph. Ruckteschell transposes this familiar pictorial motif into a non-European context. The Child is unmistakably identified as a divine figure by a luminous blue nimbus. The Mother appears in the classic red-and-blue Marian robe. At her side stands a male figure, identifiable as Joseph, who is characterised as a reserved, accompanying observer of the scene. The work was created in the East African context between 1914 and 1916 and translates the European Christian pictorial tradition into a concentrated, formally condensed visual language. This deliberate shift of established iconographic patterns into a different cultural space lends the depiction a certain tension. Despite its historical roots in a colonial context, the scene is characterised by great immediacy and inner tranquillity, and its condensed composition creates an intimate visual effect.
