Miró, Joan
L'Oiseau Destructeur. 1969. Etching, aquatint and carborundum on vellum. 69 x 91.5 cm (72.3 x 93 cm). Signed and numbered. Mounted in places on the reverse of the passe-partout. Framed under glass. - Paper slightly wavy in places at the edges due to mounting; very isolated slight crease marks; minimal scuffing in places along the edge; very isolated, very small pale brown stain; overall in very good condition and exceptionally beautiful. An exceptionally magnificent, richly textured print on a large sheet, with the colours contrasting beautifully against one another, featuring a wide margin.
Dupin 512. – One of 75 copies. – Printed by Arte Adrien Maeght, Paris. - Published by Maeght, Paris. - In the 1960s, Miró was at the height of his artistic career, and prints such as ‘L’Oiseau Destructeur’ bear witness to his consummate technical mastery and aesthetic confidence. This large-format sheet features a composition of expressive, broad black lines that coalesce into a surreal, abstract-figurative figure, accentuated by colour fields in primary colours. Eyes peering out emerge from circles, triangles and a light-coloured background, whilst lines give rise to feathers and limbs. The emerging composition of lines, shapes and colours immediately captivates and draws the viewer in. Automatism, which found its way into the art movements of the 1960s, is central to Miró’s surrealist work, within which this sheet is to be classified. Coupled with an artistically honed virtuosity and creative maturity, it stands within the oeuvre as a testament to a spirit of experimentation spanning decades.
