Description

In: Chronique des temps héroiques. Edited by Louis Broder, Paris. Sheet dimensions 24 x 17 cm. The etchings are in magnificent, rich prints with full burins; the lithographs are in clear and sharp prints (belle épreuve), faithfully reproducing Picasso’s delicate chalk lines. The woodcuts are each in excellent, strong and even prints with deep, rich blacks and a precise reproduction of Picasso’s characteristic linework. Each on Vergé-de-Montval handmade paper. Loose sheets in an illustrated original cover. Mourlot 271. Bloch 743 and 802–804. Cramer 78. Monod 6297. – First edition (published posthumously). – Second volume of the series *Écrits et Gravures*. - One of 150 numbered copies, each signed by Picasso in the colophon (GA 170). - This masterpiece of the French ‘livre d’artiste’, published by Louis Broder in Paris in 1956, is undoubtedly one of the most moving testimonies to a deep friendship between men in 20th-century art history: Pablo Picasso, the great survivor, dedicates to his friend Max Jacob – who perished in the Drancy camp – a graphic memorial of moving intimacy and technical perfection. The three hand-drawn drypoint etchings – *Max Jacob écrivant*, *Max Jacob de dos* and *Max Jacob de profil* – were created on a single day in September 1956 and possess a truly breathtaking immediacy: Picasso’s drypoint needle carves into the metal plate with remarkable precision; the full, velvety-soft ridge of the pointe-sèche lends the portraits a vitality and warmth that no other printmaking technique could have produced. The lithographed frontispiece portrait of Max Jacob – drawn in delicate chalk lines, as if breathed onto the page with the lightest of touches – is hardly inferior to these etchings in terms of expressive power and erects a monument to the poet of classical dignity. The large-format colour lithograph on the cover greets the viewer with that masterful decorative flair that only Picasso could command, transforming the book into a work of art even from the outside. The experienced wood engraver Georges Aubert has transferred the spontaneous energy of the lines in the 24 Picasso drawings onto the woodblock with remarkable mastery.
