Corinth, Lovis
Alexander and Diogenes. 1894. Drypoint on heavy vellum. 33.3 x 42 cm (43.2 x 51.7 cm). Signed, monogrammed and dated on the plate. – Smoothed crease in the lower left-hand corner and along the lower centre edge; on the reverse, a very isolated, tiny and faint brown stain; at the top centre extending to the right, a few faint, print-related colour marks; overall in very good condition. A magnificent, finely lined and high-contrast print of the multi-figure, ancient scene, with a blind-printed facet and a finely defined plate edge, featuring a wide margin and a watermark at the bottom.
Black 5 VI. – Depiction of one of the most discussed anecdotes in the history of philosophy, in which Alexander the Great and Diogenes meet in Corinth. When Alexander the Great asked what he could do for the modestly living philosopher Diogenes, the latter simply replied that he should step out of the sun.
Drypoint on strong wove paper. Signed, monogrammed and dated in the plate. – A smoothed crease mark in the lower left-hand corner and in the middle of the lower margin; on the reverse, a very isolated, tiny and faint brown stain; an isolated faint trace of colour in the upper middle to the right, due to the technique; all in all, very good. A splendid, finely drawn and high-contrast impression of the multi-figured, antique scene, with a blind-stamped facet and a finely drawn plate mark, featuring a wide margin and a deckle edge at the bottom.
