Description
Classical Modernism
Corinth, Lovis
At the Corinthers. 1920. Hardback portfolio containing the complete text and 14 drypoint etchings on yellow J.W. Zanders handmade paper with watermark, 31.7 × 24.5 cm (44.2 × 36 cm), with wide margins, loose as published. Each signed and numbered. A few sheets show slight crease marks at the edges. Overall in good condition. - Magnificent prints in velvety, vibrant black, whose raised drypoint ridges on warm handmade paper transform every line into a living stroke of the hand – fleeting and enduring at the same time.
Schwarz 380. – One of 90 copies (general edition 100 copies). - Published by E. A. Seemann, Leipzig. The portfolio ‘Bei den Corinthern’ brings together a series of lithographs in which Corinth exemplifies his penchant for dramatically condensed figural scenes and the fusion of classical motifs with modern social commentary. In tightly composed group scenes, he explores the tension between pathos and irony, bourgeois representation and latent theatricality. The characteristically free, nervous line, the alternation between dense hatching and unprinted areas, and the emphatic use of chiaroscuro lend the scenes a theatrical, almost improvised effect. The “Corinthians” appear less as historical figures than as the artist’s contemporaries – as role models of a society that oscillates between moral posturing and sensual self-expression. As such, the portfolio ranks among those of Corinth’s graphic works in which narrative density and psychological observation are combined in a particularly striking manner.

The portfolio thus ranks amongst those graphic works by Corinth in which narrative density and psychological observation combine to exceptional effect.
