Sketchbook. c. 1935/40. Six pen-and-ink drawings in black and three pen-and-ink drawings in black and white with wash on sturdier vellum. 21 x 29.8 cm. All signed and some dated. With a dedication by the artist on the reverse of the sketchbook cover. Includes a woodcut. 13.6 x 9.8 cm (16.4 x 12.5 cm). Signed and dated. – There are two small stains on the cover of the sketchbook. The edge is slightly discoloured. On the reverse of the cover is a dedication by the artist. Also on the reverse are small yellow specks; the page is slightly rubbed and marked in pencil. The pages of the sketchbook are slightly browned and some also show small yellow specks on the reverse. Partially slightly rubbed. Overall in good condition. Very fine, rough-edged pen-and-ink drawings.
We would like to thank Michael Berke for his kind confirmation. Hubert Berke was a German painter and graphic artist. Alongside his work as a commercial and book illustrator, he created his own body of artistic work. The sketchbook before us can be dated to his early creative period.
