Grosz, George
Ecce Homo. With 16 colour plates based on watercolours and 84 lithographed plates based on drawings. Berlin, Malik-Verlag, 1923. 2 leaves (title page, table of contents), XVI and 84 plates, 1 leaf (imprint). Folio. Illustrated. Original handmade paper board (slightly stained, water-stained at the edges, rubbed in places and, as is usually the case with such editions, with minor edge wear due to the protruding edges).
Herzfelde 59. – Jentsch 141. - Bülow 54. - Edition C of this iconic work, alongside Edition A the most comprehensively illustrated of all editions, featuring the richly coloured watercolours in seven-colour offset and the lithographs of the drawings, all carefully printed on sturdy offset paper. - ‘Ecce Homo’, one of George Grosz’s most famous series of prints, was only permitted to be sold in its original scope for just over a year. The harshly satirical, unsparing depictions of a capitalised, brutalised and sexualised post-war German society caused a huge stir and even landed Grosz in court. He was fined, and 15 of the 16 colour plates, as well as 17 of the drawings in the series, were subsequently confiscated. - The first and last sheets show water-stains and warping along the upper left margin; overall, a very collectable copy with clean plates, the colours rich and vibrant.
Expressionism. – With 16 coloured and 84 lithographed plates; illustrated publisher’s laid cardboard binding (somewhat soiled, water-stained and with minor flaws at the margins). - Edition C of George Grosz’s iconic work, alongside Edition A the most complete of all editions (A–D), with the watercolours reproduced in seven-colour offset and the lithographs of the drawings, all carefully printed on strong offset paper. - ‘Ecce Homo’, one of George Grosz’s most famous graphic works, was available in its original form for just over a year. The crudely satirical, unsparing depictions of a capitalised, brutalised and sexualised post-war German society caused a great stir and even led to Grosz being taken to court. He was fined, and 15 of the 16 colour plates, as well as 17 of the lithographed drawings in the work, were subsequently confiscated. - The first and last sheets are water-stained and have been widened in the top left margin; overall, this is a highly collectable copy with clean plates and particularly strong and bright colours.
