13 works, in: Comenius, Figures and Scenes from the Drama. 1975. Each lithograph or (colour) silkscreen print on vellum. Sheet size up to 57.6 x 46 cm or 50 x 65 cm. The lithographs are each signed and numbered in Roman numerals, and most are monogrammed on the stone; the serigraphs are each numbered in Roman numerals, signed twice on the stone, dated, titled and marked ‘ready for printing’ and ‘true to the original’. Each in a numbered original title slipcase, with an introduction by Heinz Spielmann, signed and numbered here, in an original cardboard box containing a record and a special edition of the brochure on the 1976 film adaptation of Kokoschka’s drama. - Of the lithographs, only one sheet has a small, faint stain on the lower right-hand margin; one has a slight crease or dent in the lower right-hand corner and a very isolated, tiny faint stain; the case has sporadic soiling on the outside; overall, in very good condition and exceptionally fine. Featuring excellent, wonderfully chalky and vivid prints with margins and a watermark on three sides, or consistently excellent, colour-rich prints with margins and a watermark on one side.
Wingler-Welz 504–509. – One of 25 Roman-numbered copies of the deluxe edition, preceding all other editions: ‘Edition de Tête’. - The lithographs were printed by J.E. Wolfensberger, Zurich; the (colour) screen prints by Grafikwerkstatt Meißner Edition, Hamburg, each bearing their respective blindstamps. - Published by Gyula Trebitsch KG and Meißner Edition, Hamburg. - As early as 1936, whilst working on the portrait ‘Masaryk’, Kokoschka repeatedly discussed Comenius with his model; Comenius’s *Orbis pictus* went on to inspire him in the following years to create literary and visual works. - Includes: Self-portrait 1975 – Comenius and Christl – Emperor Ferdinand – Empress Eleonore – Shylock – Queen Christine with the Spanish Ambassador. - The complete portfolio in a rare, magnificent deluxe edition.
