Description
Classical Modernism Expressionism Pechstein, Hermann Max The Evening, from: A Village, Sheet III. 1919. Woodcut on JWZanders handmade paper (with watermark). 31.8 x 38.8 cm (37.6 x 45.3 cm). Signed, dated and numbered, and inscribed ‘Reiberdruck F. Voigt’. Mounted in places beneath the passe-partout. - Paper very slightly wavy due to the technique; very isolated, very slight and barely visible handling/crease marks; isolated, very slight pressure-induced creases; on the reverse, in the upper margin, isolated, very faint traces of what appears to be Mounting: a small, localised brown stain in the centre of the very lower edge; overall in very good condition. A magnificent, richly textured and high-contrast print with margins. Krüger H 196. – One of 75 copies. – Sheet 3 from the 6-part portfolio ‘Ein Dorf’. – Printed by Fritz Voigt. – Published by Graphisches Kabinett I. B. Neumann, Berlin. - In several woodcuts from the portfolio ‘Dorf’, Pechstein captures rural life, presumably from the area around Buchholz on Lake Ratzeburg, where he was staying with the painter Hermann Münchhausen in the spring of 1919. At that time, Heckel spent his winters in Berlin and his summers outdoors by the Baltic Sea or in the countryside; the contrast between the bustling city and the tranquil rural life is reflected in his works. In “Evening”, a cattle pasture can be seen, with a figure at its centre who, sitting on a stool, faces the milking process. Powerful rays of sunlight spread out like a dazzling spectrum, filling the idyllic scene. Particularly striking is the powerful contrast between black and white, which Heckel achieves impressively through the technique of woodcut. Executed as a rubbing print, the sheet possesses a distinctly rich texture, in which artistic craftsmanship and visual narrative coalesce into a richly detailed composition.
