Classical Modernism Feininger, Lyonel Zottelstedt Town Hall. 1918. Woodcut on Similijapan. 22.5 x 27.7 cm (31 x 41 cm). Signed, titled and dry-stamped. - Slight brown staining at the edges; very slight crease marks at the corners; traces of former mounting showing very faintly through from the reverse to the front. Overall in good condition. An excellent, clear and high-contrast print with a wide margin, featuring the artist’s signature margin on one side. Prasse W 51. – Söhn HdO 72705-3. – One of 25 copies of the special edition from the portfolio ‘Die Schaffenden’, Vol. 2, Portfolio 1, 1920. - Edited by Paul Westheim, Gustav Kiepenheuer Verlag, Weimar 1920. - This work was created in a year in which Feininger devoted himself more intensively to the technique of woodcut and produced a large number of expressive landscape depictions. Inspired by a stay in Zottelstedt, Thuringia, in 1916, he produced numerous depictions of the Seier Tower, which the artist mistakenly titled ‘Town Hall’ and ‘Church’. The medieval building is rendered here dynamically through bold, simplified lines and intense light-and-shade contrasts. Woodcut on Similijapan.
