Description
Classical Modernism Giacometti, Alberto Lithograph based on an original drawing. In: Tristan Tzara. Ramures. 1936. Lithograph on firm, smoothed vélin. 24.8 x 19 cm. – Magnificent print in rich, contrasting black. Koepplin, Giacometti, 127. - Tristan Tzara, Les livres, 7. - One of 70 copies on Normandy vellum, hand-signed and numbered by the printer in the colophon. Published by GLM in Paris as the 11th volume of the ‘repères’ collection. - An avant-garde poetry collection by Dada founder Tristan Tzara (1896–1963), featuring fragmentary, vividly evocative verses on nature, destruction and revolution. The brilliant original drawing by Alberto Giacometti, reproduced here in a rich and high-contrast lithographic version, uses ascetic lines to accentuate the ramure-like (branch-like) themes of Tzara’s text, a milestone in modernist poetry. ‘Ramures’ (‘branches’ or ‘shrubbery’) evokes ramified, organic imagery that reflects Tzara’s break with the pure nihilism of the Dada period. - In a hand-bound white half-leather binding of white goatskin with a gold-embossed title on the spine and inlaid coloured papers in Bordeaux and black (presumably from the circle of the bookbinder Pierre-Lucien Martin). Highly prized amongst collectors, particularly when luxuriously bound as here. - In good condition. Lithograph based on an original drawing by Alberto Giacometti. In: Tristan Tzara. Ramures. 1936.
