Classical Modernism Kandinsky, Wassily 4 works from ‘XXe Siècle’ (Nos. 3 and 5–6). 1938–1939. 3 black-and-white woodcuts and 1 colour woodcut in red and blue on vellum. Approx. 31.3 x 24 cm each – each of the 3 sheets has a tear mark on the left-hand edge, resulting from the former magazine binding. The reverse is partially slightly brown-stained; the margins are in places minimally discoloured due to age. Overall in very good condition. Magnificent, bold prints from the original woodblocks with clear linework. Cf. Roethel: 111, 145, 105 and 201 (colour woodcut). Printed by Mourlot Frères, Paris. Published for Éditions XXe Siècle, San Lazzaro, Paris, 1938–1939. Includes the motifs: ‘Black Spot’, ‘Rider’s Path’, ‘Motif from Improvisation 25’ and ‘Composition for XXe Siècle (1939)’. The prints are from the rare series of the artist’s original woodcuts, which were published during his lifetime. They impressively document Kandinsky’s pioneering late period and his transition to biomorphic abstraction. 4 works. 3 woodcuts in black and white and 1 colour woodcut in red and blue on wove paper. – Each with a production-related torn edge from the original periodical binding at the left margin. The reverse shows some light foxing; the margins are partly slightly discoloured due to age. Overall in very good condition. The sheets are taken from the rare series of original woodcuts published during the artist’s lifetime. They powerfully document Kandinsky’s seminal late period and his transition towards biomorphic abstraction.
