Classical Modernism Magical Realism Roh, Franz Untitled (Allegorical depiction of the Siege of Paris 1870/71). c. 1930. Woodcut with collage on vellum. 31.5 x 25 cm. Signed. The sheet and signature, within a cut-out, are mounted on a backing and set within a passe-partout. – Slightly rubbed in places along the edges. Overall, very good condition. Private collection, Baden-Württemberg. – A paper collage comprising elements of historical prints, which Franz Roh has assembled into a composition imbued with surrealism: a veiled female figure, personifying besieged Paris, rises above the city depicted from a bird’s-eye view, whilst a snake—symbolising the Prussian encirclement—traverses the sky. Alongside his other work, the artist developed his collage practice from the 1920s onwards within the context of magical realism and Dadaist movements. Woodcut with collage on vellum. Signed. The print and the inset signature are mounted on a backing board and framed in a passe-partout. - Slightly rubbed in places along the edges.
