Mammen, Jeanne
Female Nude. 1917. Graphite on vellum. 68 x 57 cm. Monogrammed. Framed under glass (open). - Sheet irregularly trimmed; a few fingerprints on the reverse and a short, inconspicuous tear at the edge (not affecting the subject). Overall in very good condition.
Born in Paris and having lived in Berlin for many years, the artist was distinguished by her observant eye, which captured whimsical, vulnerable yet self-assured scenes and depictions of social milieus with great nuance. Particularly in her depictions of women in portraits or nudes, Mammen emancipates the image of the ‘new woman’—a woman who is not only attracted to the male sex but also acts with self-determination, replacing the male gaze with the female gaze. The women in Jeanne Mammen’s work are strong and active participants in Berlin life – for whom the artist has great sympathy. This piece, in which the woman, standing confidently on a chair, fills the entire composition, demonstrates Mammen’s empathy without being voyeuristic.
Graphite on paper. Monogrammed. Framed under glass. – Irregularly cut, isolated handling marks and a small, inconspicuous tear at the edge (not affecting the subject) on the reverse. Overall, in very good condition.
