Classical Modernism Meidner, Ludwig Untitled. c. 1920. Oil pastel on vellum. 77 x 57 cm. On the reverse, bears an estate stamp in which the inventory number ‘308 A’ is handwritten. - Edges slightly bumped and with minor losses and discolouration; a few creases in places; slightly rough to the touch, particularly on the reverse; patchy pale foxing in places. Overall in good condition. Provenance: Sotheby’s Berlin, 30 May 1991, Lot 91. - An oil pastel drawing by Ludwig Meidner, reflecting the transition from the apocalyptic landscapes of the pre-war years to an increasingly religiously charged visual vocabulary. The dense, diagonally layered hatching lends the sheet an intense quality and testifies to Meidner’s masterful command of the medium of drawing, which he increasingly favoured over painting in the early 1920s. Oil pastel on vellum. Stamped on the reverse by the estate. – Edges slightly bumped with minor losses and wear, a few creases in places, slightly rough to the touch, particularly on the reverse, some faint foxing in places.
