Description
Classical Modernism Nesch, Rolf Billiard Player. 1923/24-1. Etching on vellum. 24.5 x 30.1 cm (40 cm x 56.7 cm). Signed, titled and numbered. - Shows handling marks, isolated, very slight creases; slightly discoloured in places; paper very slightly wavy at the outer side margins; barely visible browning on the left-hand outer margin; pencil annotations on the reverse; faint traces of colour in the margins; slightly discoloured in places; overall in good condition. A magnificent, exceptionally bold and crisp print with a light, experimental-looking plate tone and a sharply defined plate edge, with a wide margin, including the watermark at the top. Exhibition catalogue: Rolf Nesch/Oslo, travelling exhibition 1949/50, compiled by the Kestner-Gesellschaft e.V., Hanover, no. 8, with illustration on p. 4. – One of a small edition of 12 copies. - Bearing the stamp of Dr Reinhard des Arts, Hamburg. - Nesch gained wider recognition particularly after his emigration to Norway in 1933; only a few prints, especially from his early creative period, remained unknown to the general public for a long time. A small circle of people maintained contact with him between Germany and Norway, including Dr Reinhard des Arts in Hamburg. An encounter with Nesch’s graphic work reveals a richness of artistic form combined with a vivid imagination. As a printmaker, Nesch was particularly keen to experiment, etching his printing plates to the extreme. In his work, both in terms of form and medium, he unmistakably stands out as an Expressionist. In ‘Billardspieler’ (Billiard Player) from his early work, his expressive approach is evident; he captures the dynamic atmosphere at the billiard table in powerful, simplified line contours and uses the experimentally treated tone of the plate as an effective contrast. This print is part of a series of works dating from his early creative phase in Germany, prior to his emigration to Norway. Etching on wove paper. Signed, titled and numbered. – With handling marks, isolated, very slight crease mark, very slightly discoloured in places, paper very slightly buckled in the right and left outer margins, barely browned in the left outer margin, pencil annotations on the reverse, faint traces of colour in the margins, slightly discoloured in places, all in all in good condition.
