The Hermit. 1920s. Watercolour on vellum. 40 x 54.5 cm. Monogrammed. Mounted on a passe-partout and framed behind glass. - Reverse slightly browned and with brown spots. Overall in very good condition; the colours are vibrant.
WVZ 3196. - From the estate of a member of the community of heirs of Christian Arnold. - We would like to thank Mr Arnold-Hoffmann for his helpful information and confirmation of the work’s authenticity. - An atmospheric composition in vibrant complementary contrasts of yellow and blue tones, depicting a reclining male figure against a mountain range. Here, Christian Arnold combines two of his favourite motifs – landscape and portraiture – which he renders in rounded forms with curved contour lines. The German artist worked as a technical draughtsman until 1924 and was active as a freelance artist from the mid-1920s onwards. As a member of the Künstlerbund and the Association for Young Art in Bremen, Arnold is regarded as one of the most important representatives of New Objectivity.
