New Objectivity
Dix, Otto
Hilde. 1924. Pencil on heavy vellum. 35 x 48 cm. Signed. - Partially with very small, scattered spots; minor paper loss in the upper left-hand corner. Overall in very good condition.
Lorenz NsK 4.3.1. – See exhibition catalogue *Otto Dix – Zwischen den Kriegen*, Haus am Waldsee, Berlin 1977. - This drawing can be placed within the context of the New Objectivity nude and was created in connection with the painting *Self-Portrait with Muse* from the same year, in which Dix stylises himself as a detached, impassive observer who appears to depict what he sees truthfully. The same tension between cool observation and physical presence also characterises this drawing, to which Dix lends a sculptural density devoid of any sentimentality. Through the alternation between precise contours and broad strokes, the composition alludes to Dix’s lifelong exploration of the human body as a social and sensual phenomenon.
