Portrait of Emilio. 1967. Pencil on thin vellum. 19.6 x 13.8 cm. Signed and dated. – Traces of mounting in the corners on both the front and back. Slightly browned in the former passe-partout cut-out. Two barely noticeable pinholes in the upper left and lower right halves of the image. Overall in good condition. An excellent, very delicate drawing with gentle modelling and subtle tonal gradations.
From the artist’s estate. - Portraits form an essential part of Christian Schad’s late work. His pencil drawings are characterised by exceptionally precise line work and subtle tonal gradations. In the portraits of the 1960s, the characteristic clarity of his New Objectivity is combined with an increasingly focused, intimate interpretation of the subject.
