Description
Classical Modernism Pechstein, Hermann Max Boxpause. 1923. Etching on vellum. 17.8 x 24.7 cm (35.3 x 52.3 cm). Signed and numbered. - Within the original passe-partout cut-out, there are several areas of slight browning; a few faint crease marks on the right-hand edge; very slight, sporadic handling marks on the left-hand edge; pale browning or tiny brown spots in three corners; a small tear (approx. 1.2 cm) in the centre left of the top edge, a few isolated pressure marks to the right of the image, narrow mounting marks in the upper corners on the reverse; overall in good condition. An excellent print with effectively rendered flat tones and a magnificent relief effect, featuring a blind-printed facet and a wide margin. Krüger R 157. – One of 60 copies. - Rare. - As early as 1910, whilst a member of ‘Die Brücke’, Pechstein was already exploring the motif of the boxing match and capturing it in drawing. A few years later, he translated it into the medium of printmaking, which afforded him the opportunity for a more experimental form of expression. This print was created during a period of personal upheaval, successes and setbacks that resembled a boxing match: in 1922–23, he separated from his wife Lotte and married Marta Möller as his second wife; the Prussian Academy of Arts elected him as a member; Pechstein was awarded a nominal professorship; he broke off relations with his art dealer Wolfgang Gurlitt and took legal action against him, thereby losing his financial security. In ‘Boxpause’, all the figures in this multi-figure composition are resting before the next round, which can be seen as symbolic of Pechstein’s recovery during this period. Etching on wove paper. Signed and numbered. - In the former mat section, repeated slight browning; a few slight crease marks in the right-hand margin, very isolated; a very slight handling mark in the left-hand margin; slight browning or rather tiny brown stains in three corners; a small marginal tear in the upper middle left (approx. 1.2 cm), a pressure mark on the right next to the image, on the reverse small traces of mounting in the upper corners; all in all in good condition. Superb impression with effective plate tone and burr, featuring a blind-stamped facet and wide margins. - One of 60 copies. - Rare. - As early as 1910, whilst a member of ‘Brücke’, Pechstein was already exploring the motif of the boxing match and capturing it in drawings. Our print was created during a period of personal upheavals, successes and defeats that resemble a boxing match: In 1922–23, he separated from his wife Lotte and married Marta Möller in his second marriage; the Prussian Academy of Arts elected him a member; Pechstein was awarded an honorary professorship; he severed ties with his art dealer Wolfgang Gurlitt and took legal action against him, thereby jeopardising his financial stability. In ‘Boxpaus’, all the figures are resting before the next round, which can be seen as symbolic of Pechstein’s resilience during this period.
